IELTS General Training: the test for work and migration
IELTS General Training is used mainly by people moving abroad for work, training or permanent residence. It tests English in everyday and workplace situations: understanding notices and job advertisements, writing letters and explaining your opinion in an essay.
Our IELTS General Training coaching covers all four modules, with extra practice on the GT-specific Reading and Writing tasks where candidates most often lose marks.
What is different in General Training?
| Module | General Training content |
|---|---|
| Reading | Three sections that move from everyday texts (notices, adverts, timetables) to workplace documents to a longer general-interest article |
| Writing Task 1 | A letter of at least 150 words — formal, semi-formal or informal |
| Writing Task 2 | An essay of at least 250 words on a general topic |
| Listening & Speaking | Same as IELTS Academic |
Writing Task 1 — letter writing
- Identifying the purpose and the reader, and choosing the right tone
- Formal letters (to a manager or company), semi-formal (to a neighbour or landlord) and informal (to a friend)
- Covering every bullet point in the question
- Correct openings and closings for each style
- Practice with complaints, requests, apologies, invitations and explanations
Writing Task 2 — essay
- Brainstorming and planning quickly
- A clear introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion
- Linking words, paragraphing and supporting examples
- Regular essay prompts with written feedback
General Training Reading
Skimming, scanning and locating specific information quickly in practical texts; handling True/False/Not Given and matching questions; managing 60 minutes across three increasingly difficult sections.
Is General Training right for you?
Most people applying for skilled work visas or permanent residence take General Training. If you are applying to a university, you probably need IELTS Academic. Some migration routes also accept PTE — compare in IELTS vs PTE or see PTE coaching. Requirements change, so always check the official website of the authority you are applying to.
