IELTS Academic: the test for studying abroad
IELTS Academic is the version required by most universities and colleges abroad for undergraduate and postgraduate admission, and by some professional bodies. It tests whether your English is ready for academic study: reading long, complex texts, describing data accurately and writing a well-argued essay.
Our IELTS Academic preparation course covers all four modules, with extra time on the two that are unique to Academic — Reading and Writing Task 1 — because that is where many students lose marks.
Academic vs General Training
| IELTS Academic | IELTS General Training | |
|---|---|---|
| Usually needed for | University admission, some professional registration | Work, training, migration |
| Reading | Long academic texts from books, journals and newspapers | Notices, adverts, workplace documents and general articles |
| Writing Task 1 | Describe a graph, chart, table, map or process (150+ words) | Write a letter (150+ words) |
| Writing Task 2 | Academic-style essay (250+ words) | Essay on a general topic (250+ words) |
| Listening & Speaking | Same for both versions | |
Always confirm which version your university accepts. For work or migration, see IELTS General Training coaching.
Writing Task 1 — describing visual information
- Reading line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, tables, maps and process diagrams correctly
- Writing a clear overview — the sentence examiners look for first
- Selecting key features instead of describing every number
- Language of trends, comparison and approximation (rose sharply, roughly a third, twice as many)
- Practice with sample visuals and model answers
Writing Task 2 — the academic essay
- Analysing the question and identifying every part you must answer
- Planning in five minutes: position, main ideas, examples
- Coherent paragraphs with clear topic sentences and linking words
- Academic vocabulary and a range of grammar used naturally
- Avoiding off-topic answers, memorised phrases and under-length essays
Academic Reading
Three long passages in 60 minutes with question types such as True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion and summary completion. We teach skimming and scanning, handling unfamiliar vocabulary through context, and identifying the writer's purpose and tone — practised with timed tests and authentic texts such as newspapers and academic articles.
Listening and Speaking
Common to both versions and taught in full in our IELTS coaching programme, with mock speaking tests and feedback.
