IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take?

Quick answer

Choose IELTS if you prefer speaking face-to-face with a human examiner and need the most widely recognised test. Choose PTE if you are comfortable with computers and typing and want a fully computer-based test with fast results. Always check which test your university or visa authority accepts.

Students preparing for IELTS and PTE

IELTS and PTE Academic are two of the most popular English tests for study, work and migration. Both measure Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and both are widely accepted — but they feel very different on test day. This guide compares the format, scoring, speaking test and results so you can choose the test that suits your strengths.

The biggest difference: the Speaking test

In IELTS you speak to a trained examiner for 11–14 minutes in three parts — personal questions, a two-minute talk on a cue card and a discussion. Some candidates find a real conversation more natural; others feel nervous in front of an examiner.

In PTE you speak into a microphone with no one in the room. Tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Re-tell Lecture are scored automatically for fluency and pronunciation. Candidates who get nervous with people often prefer this; candidates who pause a lot or speak hesitantly may find it harder.

Who usually does better in IELTS?

  • Candidates who speak naturally and like a real conversation.
  • Those who prefer handwriting or are slow typists (paper-based IELTS).
  • Applicants whose university or authority specifically asks for IELTS.

Who usually does better in PTE?

  • Candidates comfortable with computers, headphones and typing.
  • Those who get nervous in front of an examiner.
  • Learners willing to master question-specific strategies and timing.

Acceptance

IELTS is accepted by a very large number of universities, employers and immigration authorities worldwide. PTE Academic acceptance has grown significantly and it is widely used for study and visas, particularly for countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Requirements and minimum scores change, so always confirm the accepted tests and scores on the official website of your university or immigration authority before booking.

A simple way to decide

  1. Check which tests your university or visa route accepts.
  2. If both are accepted, take a short practice test of each.
  3. Choose the format where you feel more comfortable — your score will usually follow.
